Evaluation of observation drawings

Shell.

This observation drawing of a shell is not fully completed but the small amount shows high quality tone and detail making it appear 3dimensional, which therefore makes its appearance look almost realistic.

The outer part of the shell is better looking than the middle part of shell, this is because the outer part of the shell shows that the shell has a pattern across it, as well it uses tone to make it appear round instead of flat.
The middle part of the shell appears like it’s going inwards then outwards. It’s meant look like its coming out then in, so the tone was wrong in this area because it meant to be lighter not darker then the outer part of the shell.
The background was effective because it didn’t attract the eye from the drawing as well didn’t make drawing the shell hard because it was manly white colored and not a rough texture. The postcards gave the piece layers and emphasized the theme “abandoned”.

Rope.

This observation drawing of an old, rough textured rope is fully completed but art is never completed so more could be added to it, for instance the lamp which came with the rope or more rope with a different appearance/ texture. The rope focuses more on the texture which is the bumpy, rough looking appearance.

The tone used on the drawing gives it a 3dimesional appearance for instance showing its circular and that it’s bumpy. It also shows that one rope is on top of the other by the dark tone used.

The rope’s texture could be improved by it looking rougher and less neat. It looks to circular making it appear less like a rope. To improve the drawing, worn bits of rope could be added. Shadowing needs to be added to make the drawings appearance look more 3D.

The background used in the rope observation drawing is better than the background used in shell observation drawing this is because it uses an old newspaper instead of plain paper which therefore makes it more interesting and emphasizes the theme “abandoned”. This background has less blank spaces because it’s a small sized paper which meant I could focus more on detail. The background uses postcards like the shell background but was made older looking by staining it with tea to give it a brown appearance.

Rock.

This observation drawing of a close up part of a rock is fully completed but the background has blank spaces which could be used for different parts of the rock drawn using different medias. This drawing focuses more on the texture but I believe the wrong media was used. Graphite pencils could been instead of charcoal, It would have allowed me to have more control when drawing which therefore means the drawing would have more detail, making it look more realistic.

The background was very basic looking with lots of blank space. The background does not emphasis the theme “abandoned” and looks very un-neat, improvement need doing to make its appearance better. The view finder shape could have been more creative for instance be a bumpy ball to link to the rock drawing. Less yellow or a darker color could be used next time because it attracts the eye away from the drawing, which is bad as the main focus should be the drawing not the background.
